Day 27– this is just habit now…

I posted on my FB wall that in the past when I have “dieted”, I used to skip past Food Network and the Travel Channel.  The food they’d show or restaurants they’d feature would be PURE TORTURE.  The sight of  copious amounts of CHEESE, BREAD, and DESSERTS would cause me anxiety and in a few short moments I’d say “SCREW THIS DIET THING.  I’m gonna bake!”   That is a pure example of the yo-yo diet.  One moment yo-yo is up- hard core, lost a few pounds, and think I have a handle on it, and then BAM.. I see something that I’ve been deprived of, and CRASH.  Down goes yo-yo.

This Whole9/Whole 30 is so different!!  I haven’t been feeling deprived at all.  Getting past the habit of eating “ice cream” after dinner was the hardest challenge in the beginning.  But, after a week of chugging water water water til bedtime, I was good.  My meals have been very satisfying that the need for that extra something has diminished.  I am amazed.  The other day at work, a co-worker had some delicious (delicious looking- since I didn’t eat any) Filipino desserts.  Homemade!  If you know me in person, you’ll know that anything Filipino I’m going to want since I don’t get that food very often.  It’s easy to find here, but it’s expensive. (Damn Filipinos!)  This dessert looks like this and is called pitsi pitsi:

Anyways, I have my favorite lunch buddy who’s a tiny Filipino lady who is in bad-ass workout warrior shape, about 110 lbs and maybe 8% body fat.. well, she “was” also my eating buddy.  Her she is like “Judy, you want some??” Hahahaha!!  She always offers, but actually that’s our culture.  We always offer food- no matter what.  I just give her the death stare (and she’s been getting this often over the past 27 days) and she tells me “you’re so good.  You’re really sticking to you diet”.  I luv her.  She’s seen me go through the ups and downs of my weight over the last 2 years.  So, I don’t take offense to her offering because I know where it stems from.  The death stare is more for fun now, when in the past it was because I wanted to punch her in the face. LOL

Back to what I was originally talking about- Food Network and the Travel Channel-  I LOVE THESE NOW!  I watch the shows and in my head I think about ways that make them Whole 30-friendly.  I think about healthy substitutions to what they use in the recipes.  My creative juices are flowing and my Youtube Channel is in the works.  You’ll be getting to view my cooking “show” soon enough.

I’m off to work today- more Filipino temptations to conquer-I work with 60% Filipinos and we it’s kinda like a potluck every day in the lounge.  But, I’ve got this handled!  I politely say no and offer them my oranges and avocados.

What am I doing?? What is that?? I’m not trying to sell you on this, but….

I am eating WHOLE foods…  animal protein, veggies, fruits, healthy fats/oils,  nuts, and seeds.  It doesn’t get cleaner than that!!

When choosing the foods I eat I try to eat local veggies and fruits.  I’m not caught up on the organic label- if It fits in my budget, I’ll grab some.  I’d prefer my meat to be humanely raised and grass-fed.  I love eggs– cage free and/or organic are the way to go with these.  I eat a lot of them.  I use Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, citrus fruits, and vinegars to cook with.  I make my own sauces and dresses and even my own mayonnaise.  My favorite fruit is now the avocado.

Eating this way makes me feel lighter on my feet!!  My strength and cardio endurance has increased dramatically.  I also feel more energized in the morning and sleep really well through the night.

Since I started eating this way, I noticed not only what I mentioned above, but my skin glows and my body composition is shifting.  I don’t have “fat rolls” where they once were and my muscles are becoming more defined.  These changes MOTIVATE me to focus on more exercise to get even more toned and defined.

This is no longer a 30 day program for me, but an entire lifestyle change.  I can only improve from here.

Couponing, CSA’s, and Co-Ops (Clean Eating doesn’t have to be costly)

The biggest concern I hear from friends and Beachbody clients is that eating healthy costs a lot.  There are ways around this ‘fear’- yes it’s a fear.  Change is scary! Doing something you’re not used to is scary.  Destroying life long habits is scary too.  But, YOU have to decide if YOU are worth it and  If YOUR family is worth it.

I use coupons quite a bit.  But now I’ve limited my couponing to mostly household items; foil, saran wrap, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products, etc.  Coupons allow for me to have more funds to go into my food shopping.  For foods, I also coupon for Earthbound Farm Organic Produce– sign up for the email subscription.  I get a new coupon every week or 2, which I can print out twice.  I also discovered Food Lion– when I shop there, I’ve been receiving $2-$4 off coupons on my next produce purchases.  Kroger-   has their own line of organic produce as well and offers digital coupons loaded on their membership card.  Simple Truth coupon link here.  Also Eggland’s Best Eggs has a cage free or organic product line.  There are often coupons in the Sunday paper or you can ‘sometimes’ print coupons from Incredible Edible Egg.  Another great printable coupon site is http://www.commonkindness.com   I’ve seen organic tuna, nut butters, and trail mix on there.  There are way to save.

Living in Va Beach, we have a ton of options to get fresh local vegetables, fruits, and even grass fed beef, chickens, ducks, and even happy pork!  I’ve been researching this for the past two weeks, thus slacking on this blog.  There are also online resources to get these foods delivered to your door.  Who would have known, right?

For the benefit of my local friends, here’s the link to LOCAL FOODS for Va Beach and Norfolk.  Plus the Dam Neck Farmer’s Market and the Five Points Community Farm Market.   I also discovered two great sources for meat.  Now, is it worth it to buy grass fed, humanely treated animal protein?  I say YES!  Aside from the GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) that can trickle from the animals food into you-  Grass Fed animal protein is leaner and better for you than conventional meat.  Check out this article from AmericanGrassFedBeef.com  Health Benefits of Grass Farming.

Here are two regional farms that have monthly deliveries to Hampton Roads.  I found their prices to be better than those at the grocery store.  I just need to get a freezer before ordering!

My advice for everyone that really wants to eat better, feel better, and improve their health is to- CUT OUT THE JUNK you’re buying!  No more sodas, no more condiments (they’re full of sugar anyways!) Seriously… you can increase your healthy food budget by cutting your junk budget.  It takes work and commitment.  If this was easy- EVERYONE would be doing it.  

This is IT!! The final countdown…

It’s the Final Countdown (video link). Not only am I ending my first round of the Whole 30 program on Father’s Day (Jun 16), we’re in the final work/school week before vacation.  There are so many things to do before we take off.  I wonder if I can bring applesauce on the plane for the kiddos.  I can’t remember the layout of the airport after we get through security; what restaurants are there or shops to grab some waters at $5/bottle.

Planning, planning, and more planning:   I’ll be able to eat breakfast and lunch at home.  But dinner is going to VERY late if we wait until we land (8:30pm PST which is 11:30pm)  So- I’m thinking of foods and trying to figure out what TSA won’t confiscate. Darren thinks a salad in a jar would be ‘out’.  I’m going to research more on that one.

It’s also the final week of workouts at home and then I’ll be working out with the cool kids of Beachbody in Las Vegas.  I can’t wait!!  So far, I think we’re working out with the Les Mills gang;  Dan and Rach.  And then I think Darren and I will split up- he’ll go with the Body Beast folks and I’m going over to Tony Horton.  The next day, I want to do T25 with Shaun T.  I think that will be my next cardio training program to train for the Tough Mudder.  Yes- you heard me right.  TOUGH MUDDER.   This ‘used to be Fat mom’ is going to go through the toughest race in the world come OCTOBER 2013.  Watch out!

All in all, I’m dreading all the packing.  We have fancy parties and also our Vow Renewal ‘wedding’ to pack for.  I think I’m packing 8 pairs of shoes (2 of them being work out shoes), 2 cocktail dresses, and then some shorts, shirts, and undergarments.  Darren’s got uniforms, his party clothes, and normal stuff.  He can get away with 4 pairs of shoes (uniform, dress, workout shoes, and flip flops).  Guys have a it easy.  And then the boys need all sorts of clothes plus their life preservers.. 2 different pairs of shoes each.  Kayla (the girl) is on her own to pack.  She doesn’t return for a few days after we get back.

I’m done for my morning ramblings for now- stay tuned.  I’m going to talk about food in a couple of hours or so.  I’m off to the bus stop.

DAY 22– one week to go

I thought I was going to blog my entire journey, but I got totally sidetracked during week 2 and 3. You would think that this was a  good thing because I must have been focused on other things rather than being on this new eating plan. NOPE- I really didn’t focus on other stuff though, I scoured websites for recipes, searched stores for who had cheaper produce, looked up local farms and co-ops for grass fed animals, yadda yadda.

A few things I learned- I need a upright freezer to hold all the meat and veggies I am accumulating.  Mind you, we have a 2nd refrigerator in the garage. And we actually had a 3rd fridge that we brought when we moved into the house.  But we sold that pronto. The freezer portion of the garage fridge/freezer is holding 2 frozen Pepperidge Farms Fudge cakes and 6 bags of Sister Schubert’s rolls.  A Paleo-Momsters worse nightmare, right?   They’ll come in handy when we’re attending a potluck or a dinner party and want to bring something though.  So, I’m not going to donate them just yet.   Amongst these food abominations are Weight Watchers ice cream bars, Bagel Bites, and then the good stuff; lamb chops, pork shoulder, all-natural chicken quarters, grass fed beef, and frozen veggies.

Another item I would like to purchase is an Emersion Blender.  My Ninja isn’t cutting it as far as blending things smooth.  It more or less whips my squash or dates around the bowl and I have to scrape down the sides constantly. I had this same problem with the Vitamix.  So please don’t tell me to get a $400 blender (again). Although, my Ninja did do an excellent job at making Mayonnaise the other night. My favorite recipe is from Clothes Make the Girl.  I will never buy store bought again- who needs all those preservatives in the jarred stuff??

I do not know how much I weigh.  Darren really did hide the scale from me.  I nearly woke him up at 6:30AM to ask where it was.  But that temptation subsided when I saw how soundly he was sleeping.  PLUS- He’s running in the Tough Mudder this afternoon.  Way to go, BABE!!   I want to train all year for the next one.  We’ll see how that pans out.  Let me get through this mini goal and then it will be baby steps again to the next.

Day 5 and end of Day 6 recap – when will I stop focusing on food?

Today started out great.  I am down another pound!  That makes -6 since Saturday.  But, I seriously need to break up with my scale.  I’m giving myself until Monday and we are over- done- finit-o.  Darren will have to take it to work with him.

Yesterday- Wednesday

Breakfast was steak and sweet potatoes.  The sweet potatoes were topped with homemade coconut butter.  So good!  My taste buds have never been so happy with an eating program.  The steak was salt and peppered good which went well with the sweet, sweet potatoes.

I also had my coffee with my favorite coffee creamer.  I’m still thinking about ditching coffee.  With eating an actual breakfast within one hour of waking up, I don’t think I need it.  I think it could just be a habit.  And this program is all about breaking habits.

After getting Junior on the bus and Ethan situated with his morning snack, I got in a great Les Mills Combat Workout.  Ethan had his lunch and I was still stuffed from breakfast.  Not a bad feeling to be honest.  After E left for school, I hit up the grocery shopping.  Check out what I bought for a meer $60… all Whole9 approved too!

Organic chicken, pork country style ribs, ground chicken, chicken livers, cauliflower, peppers, spaghetti squash, sweet potatoes, spices (one of which alone cost $5), very light olive oil, cocoa powder, and those Lara Bars folks were talking about (Cherry Pie flavor and Cashew Cookie).  Now what am I going to cook with all this??  My plan is pre-cook some foods for lunches and for quick dinners on the days that I work.  So far, from this stash I’ve marinated a pack of the organic chicken, and cooked one pack of the ribs in the crock pot.  I’ve also turned the cauliflower into “rice”.

I didn’t get home until around 2’ish.. and still hadn’t eaten!  I ate the last of the ceviche that I made on Sunday (I think it was Sunday… or Monday) I’m going to need to date my food containers.  Some of the items I bought today were for dinner; the paprika, cocoa powder, and cauliflower.  I was taking a crack at the Mole’ Chicken w/plantain tostadas (fritters) w/cauliflower rice.  Here’s how it looked when assembled sans “rice”.

Can you say YUM??? !!  The flavors were out of this world.  I got the mole recipe from one site and the plantain tostada recipe from another.  The sweet plantains totally complimented the smokey mole sauce.  Darren got to take the leftovers to work. My cooking usually makes his co-workers hungry since the aromas take over the office.

Today- Thursday

Breakfast was steak and sweet potatoes (again).  I don’t mind.  Makes this simple if I repeat meals.  Plus, I had marinated and shredded the sweet potato the night before. Had my coffee too.  I usually walk with it to the bus stop and sip away waiting for the bus.  I got Ethan ready for school, armed him with his snack and  then went to  work out with some Tri’s and chest muscles in our garage/gym.  I even threw in some burpees and thruster squats too.  I have so much more energy now !!  Lunch I was in a pinch since I had to work today.  My boss was visiting, so I wasn’t going to have much time to eat at my regular time.  So I just had more sweet potato and steak.  I did bring that Cherry Pie Lara Bar and a few deviled eggs w/avocado with me.  I noshed on them around 2PM.  Dinner was event of course… I had precooked the country pork ribs all day in the crock pot with onions, carrot, and celery, rubbed the ribs in Chinese 5 spice powder and salt.  SO GOOD!.

When I got home, all I had to do was dice up peppers, onions, garlic, and ginger– sautee in a big pot.. add a can of coconut milk, the juice of one can of pineapple chunks and 1/4 cup fish sauce.  I took 2 big ribs out of the crock pot and cut it up.  tossed that in the pot too.  just cook until pepper are tender.  Rice was easy.. throw cups in a bowl, cover, and microwave for 2 minutes.  Add salt, and chopped cilantro.  Dinner is served.

FEELINGS

As far as how I’m feeling- I feel very food focused.  That’s all I can seem to plan and concentrate on.  What food to buy?  What will I eat for each meal?  What an I make that the kids will eat too? Oh gosh, we’re out of eggs and avocados!! I’m sure after I get some standard meals down, I won’t be over thinking this at all.  I just want to be “perfect” at this because I am an “all or nothing” type of person.  That too, is another hard habit to break.  Hopefully, it will happen in these 30 days along with my lifelong relationship with my scale, and maybe even the coffee love.

Right now, I’m resisting my nightly cup of tea in hopes that I will get to sleep at a reasonable hour.  I want to aim for 8 hours a night.  Goodnight!
